A security system is installed in a commercial or residential building. Upon a trigger event ( like a break in, hold up or fire), the system seizes the phone line and calls the CMS (central monitoring station), which may be an alarm company or a special organization. The system sends data over the phone line and is received and acknowledged by a hardware device called digital receiver. The receiver sends the alarm information to a computer where it is interpreted, processed and presented to a dispatcher for action. In the case of a break in or hold up, the dispatcher may attempt verification of the event by calling the premises (also known as a subscriber) or will dispatch the police depending on the procedures followed at the central station or the instructions given by the resident or business. Dispatchers can also send medical help, fire personnel, service and maintenance personnel.
