Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are planning to mass produce 55-, 60-, 65- and 75-inch Ultra HD (3840 by 2160) TV panels either in the first or second quarter of 2013, according to industry sources.
The sources said the makers are increasingly optimistic about the Ultra HD TV market and want to remain competitive in the high-end TV segment as their OLED TVs are still facing mass production issues. Additionally, the sources added that 55-inch OLED TVs are expected to be priced around US$10,000, which will restrict the units to limited markets.
Samsung is expected to cut the Ultra HD TV panels along with 85-inch Ultra HD TV panels on its 8.5G line, added the sources.
Taiwan-based panel makers AU Optronics (AUO) and Innolux Corporation (which changed its name from Chimei Innolux on November 14, 2012) meanwhile are expected to have their Ultra HD TV panels ready for mass production by the beginning of first-quarter 2013, said the sources. The sources added this will put the makers at a rare advantage over Korea-based TV panel makers in 2013 and help them establish a stronger position in supplying panels for the high-end TV segment.
AUO has already reportedly supplied Japan-based TV vendor Toshiba with 55-inch Ultra HD panels that have glasses free 3D technology and is expected to supply 65-inch ones to Sony in the first half of 2013. AUO is also expected to supply various Ultra HD panels to China-based TV vendors during the same time period, which will push up AUO's Ultra HD TV panel shipments to as high as two million by the end of 2013, added the sources.
