Intel extended its lead in the PC graphics chip market in the second quarter at the expense of rivals AMD and Nvidia, Jon Peddie Research (JPR) reported Monday.
Intel nabbed 67.3% of the market in Q2 vs. 61.7% in the same quarter last year, JPR said. In the first quarter, Intel had 66.8% market share in graphics chips.
Advanced Micro Devices remained in second place with 17.9% market share, up from 16.7% in the first quarter but down from 21.9% in Q2 2013.
Nvidia was in third place with 14.7% market share in Q2, down from 16.6% in the first quarter and 16.2% in Q2 2013, JPR said.
Graphics chip shipments in the second quarter of 2014 were up 3.2% from the first quarter but down 4.5% from the second quarter of 2013, JPR said.
Graphics processing units are traditionally a leading indicator of the PC market, since a GPU goes into every system before it is shipped, JPR said in a press release. At least one and often two GPUs are present in every PC sold. Graphics processors can take the form of a discrete chip or be embedded in the central processing unit.
The average number of GPUs per PC has grown from 1.2 in 2001 to nearly 1.35 today, JPR said.
JPR is forecasting GPU shipments of 414.2 million in 2014, down 5% from the 438.3 million GPUs shipped in 2013. It sees total shipments of graphics chips in 2017 to be 418 million units.
