Duskin Co., operator of the U.S.-founded Mister Donut chain, said Thursday it will acquire Malaysian doughnut chain Big Apple Worldwide Holdings Sdn. Bhd. in December to expand its business in Southeast Asia.
Duskin said it will buy a 90 percent stake in BAWH, which was established in 2006 and operates 85 outlets in Malaysia and Cambodia, to make it a subsidiary on Dec. 1. The Osaka-based company did not disclose the investment amount.
BAWH group sales in 2014 stood at about ¥1.03 billion ($9.6 million).
The Japanese company, which entered the Malaysian market in 2011, said it aims to reduce sourcing and distribution costs through the acquisition.
“Malaysia has been seeing continued growth in its population and economy. We’d like to appeal to middle-income consumers in the country,” a Duskin official said.
At present, Duskin operates Mister Donut stores in China, Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia in addition to Japan and Malaysia.
