EDM ( electrical discharge machine or machining), invented in 1943, is a non-traditional machining method primarily used for hard metals. It can remove metal from a workpiece by using a series of electric sparks to erode material. The EDM process is most widely used by the mould-making tool and die industries, but is becoming a common method of making prototype and production parts, especially in the aerospace, automobile and electronics industries in which production quantities are relatively low.
