E.ON to build UK Rampion offshore wind farm

May 19, 2015

Germany utility E.ON SE is teaming up with the UK’s Green Investment Bank to invest in the Rampion offshore wind farm, set to be located off England’s southern coast, and supplied with Vestas wind turbines.

The Rampion Offshore Wind Farm is set to be located off Brighton in Southern England, in the English Channel. The project will have the capacity to generate 400 MW of electricity, and is expected to generate 1,300 GWh of renewable energy each year — which, according to E.ON, is enough to supply electricity the equivalent of 300,000 homes, and reduce CO2 emissions by up to 600,000 tonnes per year.

Monday saw both E.ON and Vestas Wind Systems announce their involvement in the Rampion offshore wind farm.

Vestas Offshore Wind announced the firm and unconditional order for 116 of its V112-3.45 MW wind turbines for the Rampion offshore project, with a total capacity of 400 MW. Delivery is expected to start in the first quarter of 2017, and Vestas has not been contracted for anything beyond supply.

E.ON similarly announced the successful investment of €1.9 billion ($2 billion USD) into the Rampion offshore wind project, in partnership with the UK Green Investment Bank which has acquired a €327 million stake in the project.

“Our Rampion project starts from a strong position,” said Mike Winkel, E.ON board member. “Technically, the project is an optimized evolution of our four most recent offshore wind projects. We rely on proven technology and installation processes. With these preconditions E.ON will demonstrate its top-class competencies that we have developed in managing the construction and operation of offshore wind farms.”
